Earth Tu Face founder, Sarah Buscho, sat down with Shout Out LA recently and dished on her beginnings in the skincare industry, favorite places in the California Bay Area, and more! Her conversation is transmitted below. Original article here!
Hi Sarah, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
The astronomer Carl Sagan said “We’re made of star stuff.” I love this both in scientific and metaphysical terms. That elements like carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and others were created billions of years ago, and now make up our physical bodies is astounding. It lends perspective in daily life when I feel bogged down by small details — after all we are made of stars. Equally it conjures the wondrous cyclical nature of life. Stars loose their mass and the elements created inside said stars form the next new generation of stars in space. The evolution continues. This inspirational cycle connects me back to nature, the majesty of the present moment, and to a sense of innovation and possibility. Just because a thing hasn’t been done before doesn’t mean it isn’t possible.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am an herbalist and Earth Tu Face is little line of 100% natural skincare with minimal waste packaging. It is pure botanical beauty goodness that we hand make in Concord, California. We grow organic flowers in San Rafael for our both face masks (honey + clay). Now a tiny company of 3 women, Earth Tu Face is formulated with plants that rejuvenate skin + with the planet in mind to make sure our products return to the earth as gently as possible. The core belief is what is good for the earth is good for us. We are most proud of creating a healing salve Skin Stick in a USA-handmade paperboard tube that fully biodegrades after use (no more plastic in the ocean!), our zero water face balm (cult favorite), gentle botanical face wash, and botanical seashells filled with lip balm or plant perfume. Nature and the inherent intelligence of complex ecosystems will forever be our inspiration. Which is why our products are beautiful as well as sustainable, imbued with intoxicating scents + balmy textures, ready to provide an antidote to life’s busy routines. It has been over eight years since we have launched. In 2012 green beauty wasn’t mainstream and I spent a lot of time explaining what an essential oil was or that oils were good for skin. It has been hopeful to watch the blooming of natural beauty over the past years.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
West Marin is one of my favorite parts of the Bay Area. I would drive them out to Hog Island Oyster company and we would shuck our own oysters on Tomales Bay. We would then hike through the Tule Elk Reserve from Pierce Point Ranch to the Tomales Point. On our way back into town we could mushroom hike in one of the state parks depending on the time of year.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Crystal Meers is someone I will forever be grateful for. When I met her, her joy and true sweetness was something I had never encountered. I think this was back in 2012. I looked at her and asked if she was “actually an angel?” She supports this little business, is now on our board, and brings fresh ideas and perspectives, and is a full of charisma. Definitely dedicating our shoutout to this mentor mama.
