Spring is the season for gentle cleansing and green nourishment. Just as we “spring clean” our houses we can detoxify gently and naturally by adding green vegetables and herbs into our diet. Consuming nutrient-rich, seasonal food is just what the body needs to stay in balance. These can be ingested as food, juice, and/or tea.

Here are three herbs and three vegetables for spring health. In addition to being in season, all of these foods are nutrient-packed and detoxify the body.

Cilantro: a natural detoxifier.

Cilantro excels at removing heavy metals from the body. It is a great remedy for enhancing digestive function.

Oregano: packed with antioxidants.

Oregano helps us stay healthy through transition seasons like spring. A powerful anti-bacterial herb that has rivals the effects of penicillin in recent university studies. It makes a great tea when you feel like your coming down with something.

Parsley: a nutrient rich digestive aid.

Parsley is high in minerals and is especially cleansing to the kidneys. It is a good source of iron and vitamins b12, c, and k.

Asparagus: a nutritive diuretic.

Asparagus moves excess fluids out of the body and helps cleanse the kidneys gently. It contains antioxidant and detoxifying compounds that help break down carcinogens and protect against free radicals.

Artichokes: especially cleansing to the liver + gallbladder.

Artichokes bitter flavor is an indication of their action on these organs and their ability to stimulate digestion. They are a great source of folic acid along with many other vitamins and minerals.

Arugula: a spicy spring green full of vitamins + nutrients.

Arugula is rich in vitamin c, vitamin k, calcium, iron and potassium, just to name a few. It contains high levels of chlorophyll and is a member of the brassica family, a group of vegetables known to help prevent cancer.
